Employer Partners of Hinesburg Rides

The Employer Partner Transportation Program works with local employers to coordinate various low-cost initiatives for providing better commuting options, i.e., vans, carpooling, bus, etc. These initiatives will help protect our environment, reduce cost of travel, and enable employers to employ and retain employees. Our goal is for this program to help pave the way for public transportation by CCTA.

After extensive work and many meetings with transportation providers, Hinesburg Rides, and NRG Systems (who has pledged their support), mass transit could become a reality. The Chittenden County Transportation Authority (CCTA) and Addison County Transportation Resources (ACTR) have proposed to the Town Selectboard to provide weekday bus service from Hinesburg to Burlington and to Bristol. The proposed services would include two public bus runs in the morning and two in the afternoon, designed to support local residents commuting to Burlington and employees of area businesses commuting to Hinesburg.

Mass transit would offer these advantages:

• greater environmental sustainability through reduced greenhouse gas emissions and lessened dependence on foreign oil
• car-free access for Hinesburg-area residents to jobs and services both in Burlington and Bristol
• convenient, reliable transportation for employees working for Hinesburg businesses and schools
• significant cash savings for bus riders who reduce their higher-cost car commuting
• enhanced community services to support local economic development and jobs

The first step is for Hinesburg to join CCTA as a member town through a positive vote at Town Meeting in March 2010. As a member, Hinesburg would gain a seat on CCTA’s Board of Directors and would enable CCTA and ACTR to pursue federal and state funding to subsidize this local bus service.

Although we looked at other cities and towns for a new site, we were happy to remain in Hinesburg, where we have been for several years. The town of Hinesburg, with a population of 4,000, was our company’s first real home and has been incredibly supportive to us over the years. Our building is located near the town center, giving us easy walking access to town services. In the future, we plan to build recreation paths around our building and through the community for the use of our employees and Hinesburg residents. Our building features showers and bike racks to make it convenient for our employees who choose car-free commuting or want to exercise during their workday.
